Quo Vadimus
I've lost the post that I started yesterday, so I'm restarting this one today. I will keep it brief, as my fellow bloggers have given you great overviews of the topics. One of the first things I thought of in the first session I attended yesterday is "Quo vadimus." Basic translation--"Where are we going?" I found it not only fit librarianship as a whole, and it turned up as a reoccuring theme in the presentations that I attended.
In the wiki session, we see that social software is the way that the millenial generation is communicating with each other. It is shaping their world and ours as well.
In the second session (the Keynote address) we were challenged to think about where the profession is going and how we can get where we want to go. He challenged us to define our profession, use core library educational curriculum to make sure each library school graduate has a common knowledge base to work from, and to make sure that those we hire to teach have research interests that covers that knowledge base and as importantly, adds to it.
The next session, "Dialogues in Diversity" we were asked to describe an object. Some people took a look at the physical properties, while others thought in a more abstract, philosophical way. The challenge was to "think outside our comfort zones", to put ourselves in our students shoes and to make sure that we could find ways to teach to the three learning styles . We found commonalities and differences with those students, and brainstormed on how to reach all the students in our classroom.
