Bumpy Road Workshop (Desotelle)

Karen E.Desotelle of Marquette University spoke about "journeying with novice college learners".

Through a few exercises and excellent examples, she shows us why many college students struggle with their college coursework and are dismayed that they aren't living up to their "A" student expectations.

Moving from a rather structured and predictable high school learning environment to a much more independent college environment is difficult and the students often don't understand why they are failing.

Memorization is often "key" to high school success, but not enough to carry them on to college success.

Students have to be taught to create "frameworks" and "concept mapping" which aid them in understanding and assimilating the new information by building their own visuals/pictures.

This should equal college success!
